They also argue there will be no “transitional” society between capitalism and full socialism as when there are sufficient numbers in the population to vote for socialism, full socialism (or what we call communism) can be established immediately.
The SPGB are in favour of the ‘parliamentary road to socialism’ and argue that a general election in which a majority of the electorate vote for the SPGB, a majority of SPGB MPs in parliament can immediately legislate in “full socialism”.
But the SPGB also argue a majority can be just 50% plus one.
So, if 51% of the population are convinced socialists and vote SPGB, that implies 49% are non-socialist.
So, how can the SPGB argue:
(1) all potential issues in socialist society will be resolved as “most” peoples will be socialist?
(2) That “full socialism” can be immediately established based on just 51% of the population?
(3) That there will be no need for any “transitional” society, given that 49% of the population will by definition be non-socialist, maybe even activity hostile to socialism?
What would the SPGB administration do in the even of being supported by only 51% of the population? Would they try and implement the will of the majority or would they be forced to accept they could not implement their version of full socialism against 49% of the population? Would they resign from office, despite having won 51% of the vote?
