After having read this post I thought I would look at some more info on the wedding in the sources that are freely available online. And I came across an article written at the time of the Golden Wedding anniversary of the Grand Ducal couple. In this article they refer to a letter written by the Grand Duchess sister, the Duchess of Teck, where she mentions the wedding and what her sister wore. She actually recalls her sister to having worn not one, not two but three tiaras: one a gift from her mother, the second one a gift from the groom and the third the gift from the Queen Dowager. If this is true it must have been a blazing sight, and it is funny to read that Queen Vitoria wrote of the same head-dress but saying it was "a little diadem". So very different views.
The Duchess of Teck also says that Augusta wore a necklace of diamonds, also a gift from the Queen Dowager.

A few years ago we discussed the wedding jewels worn by Princess Augusta of Cambridge at her wedding in 1843, and discovered that the newspapers had 2 distinct versions: one claimed she wore a sapphire tiara, the other that she wore a diamond tiara given to her by Queen Adelaide.

As I was looking through my notes from Queen Victoria's journals today, my attention was drawn to the Queen's description of the jewels.
Queen Victoria stated that the bride wore a "wreath of orange flowers & myrtle & a little diadem at the back of this."
In the journal Queen Victoria had a sketch of the bride showing that her hair was piled high at the back of her crown with the "little diadem" positioned in front.
So it seems that the papers which claimed Princess Augusta wore a diamond tiara were correct, as I am sure that, if the tiara contained sapphires, they would have been mentioned by Queen Victoria. Certainly, the Cambridge sapphire tiara could never be called a little diadem.
