Brooken MARY QN - 1922/03/12 - SV TO - BELGIUM
MARY PRCSS - 1897 - DEVONSHIRE BALL
MARY PRCSS - 1901
Queen Mary's stomacher, made in 1920 using two pieces already in her collection:
- the Kapurthala Stomacher, given to her by the Maharajah of Kapurthala India,
- a diamond crescent by Garrard from the town of Swansea Wales, both of which she received as wedding presents in 1893.
Queen Mary had Garrard design a diamond stomacher. This stomacher has remained in the Royal Collection and has been worn as originally intended: a collection of three brooches. The exquisite workmanship is typical of the standard demanded by Queen Mary for her jewels.
She gave it to her granddaughter Princess Elizabeth (later Queen) as a wedding gift.
Queen Elizabeth II has worn the entire stomacher only once, for her Golden Jubilee in 2002, but she's worn the lower part as a brooch sometimes in her youth.
