Meanwhile I´ve take a look on Lady Mary Stuart Walker. She was the oldest of seven siblings of the family of the 4th Marquess of Bute. I found it quite interesting that she was already 27 when she married while all her siblings were younger at their weddings (research on genealogics.org, the peerage). And I agree with you that it was not uncommon for an unmarried woman to wear a tiara, certainly not for a woman of her age and at this time.
As I assumed, she died in 1980. She had two daughters and seven grandchildren. 1982 would be an expectable time for auctioning her estate.
