I too read that Queen Alexandra never came out of mourning after her eldest son died in 1892 Eiriksn. Unfortunately I cannot remember where I read this, but if that is the case it would not be strange to see her wear amethysts.

I wish I had my books available so I could check this... I seem to recall that it has been written somewhere that Queen Alexandra more or less wore half mourning for the rest of her life after the death of her son the duke of Clarence. Anyone else remember reading this?

I could have been a personal preference to certain colors and jewels though.
