I cannot comment on Lady Curzon but wasn't even some of Queen Alexandra's jewels paste as she didn't like travelling with real gems?
I believe Queen Alexandra's niece Princess Margaretha of Sweden's fake tiara was sold a few years back by a French auction house. She had a fake one made so she could keep it at home to wear and the original was kept in the bank and she didn't have the hassle of going back and forth.
It makes sense from a practical point of view but also given High society at the time was competitive and significant focus was placed on women's appearance and dress, it isn't surprising that some women would want to give a certain impression and wear as grand jewellery as possible, even if it wasn't real!
