At first I thought that I had spotted an outing of the Greville Emerald tiara. But then I checked the date and the article was from June 1938. And as we know Mrs Greville was still alive by then, only leaving this world some years later, in 1942. In 1938 Queen Mary was also still alive, so I don’t think it is very likely that the Queen wore any of Queen Mary’s pieces – which then rules out the Vladimir tiara with emeralds.
I have searched through previous posts to see if anybody else had noticed this, but I was not able to find anything. If I have missed it, I apologize for bringing this up again. But I would like to know if anybody has any theory as to what tiara this might be. And even the necklace and bracelet is of interest, although I suspect more difficult to identify.
Could Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother own, or at least have ready access to, an emerald tiara at this point in time? Another option could of course be that the article got it wrong and that it was not emeralds at all. Could the aquamarine tiara be mistaken for emeralds?
I only have “The Times”’ article, so not sure if any other newspaper or magazine would support the report of an emerald tiara.
In any case I thought it was a fascinating bit of information as the Queen Mother was not exactly known for wearing emerald tiaras. And the grand emerald necklace she was seen to wear from time to time only came into her possession with the bequest made by Mrs Greville.
So could there indeed be more emeralds lurking in the vaults at Buckingham Palace? We can only HOPE so and that we will at some point be lucky enough to see them
