Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the Death of Princess Anna of Battenberg, the Montenegrin Princess who became the last Battenberg Princess and the aunt of two Kings, three Queens, a Greek Princess and Lord Mountbatten,
and while I was writing my article on her today
, I came across an intriguing find about the Battenberg Jewels!
In the only portrait I found of Princess Anna, she wears this spectacular diamond necklace, which appears to be the same one (the upper portion at least) worn by her mother-in-law, Julia, Princess of Battenberg, at the Wedding of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg in 1885
Except a spray of diamond roses given to the later Marchioness of Carisbrooke, mentioned by Ursula
, I don't think the origin and the fate of the Battenberg jewels have been discussed.
