[Edit: After reading Beth’s post above and the information about the 1960’s sale my theory is obviously nonsense.]
The only son of the 16th Earl and Countess died in infancy. After the earl’s death in 1852, his titles were inherited by a second cousin who died unmarried in 1856 at the age of 24. His peerages subsequently passed to a very distant relative following a long legal case against the claims of – among others – Princess Mary Alathea Doria Pamphilj, only surviving daughter of the 16th Earl and Countess. Under these circumstances I find it quite possible that it was Princess Doria Pamphilj who inherited her mother’s diamond necklace. Her and her daughter-in-law Emily’s jewellery collection was substantial. Sothebys auctioned Emily’s emerald necklace together with other jewellery of the Doria Pamphilj family in Geneva in 2016.
