According to Suzie Menkes the brooch was designed by the acclaimed jewellery designer, Jane Sarginson. Menkes' text implies that it was given to Princess Diana by Jane Sarginson in 1984.
Franck included this brooch in his list posted in August 2018. See https://mb.boardhost.com/historyroyaljewels/thread/1533308420.html
But what Menkes implies is not strictly accurate, although Jane Sarginson did design the brooch and it was presented in 1984.
As I find it futile to re-invent the wheel, I checked all the sites run by the experts, but could not find any details of the origins of the brooch.
The brooch was commissioned from Jane Sarginson by the Worshipful Company of Grocers, one of the great Livery Companies in London.
When Princess Diana was made an honorary freeman of the Company on 24 January 1984 she was presented with the brooch as a memento of the occasion, the brooch incorporating a laden camel, the main element of the insignia of the Company.
As we saw previously when Queen Elizabeth II was made a Freeman of the City of London she wore the brooch which had been given to her when she became a Freeman of the Company of Drapers.

Likewise, Princess Diana wore the gift of her "Mother Company" when she was granted the Freedom of the City of London in 1987.

I haven't yet found any direct reference to why the Company of Grocers was chosen for Princess Diana; however, before Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was granted the Freedom of the City of London, she became a Freeman of the Company of Grocers.
Unfortunately, I cannot find if she too was given a similar brooch/badge.
When QEQM was made a Freeman of the Company of Grocers the ceremony was held in the evening, and the Queen wore her rubies and Queen Mary's fringe tiara.
It was because of her links to the Company of Grocers that camels featured in QEQM's 100th birthday parade.
