I guess too much negative sentiment against the Hohenzollerns and other royals that took part/occupied political or government places during the Hitler regime ran rampant after WW2, and the people lost trust and faith towards their royals.
I do know that the Württemberg Royal Family has more of less of an unofficial status in the state. I think they’re the only family whom a German state is named after so yeah there’s that.
Malaysia works as a federation of royal states each one with their own royal family and unique traditions, they choose a ‘King’ to serve as Head of State for a period of 5 yrs from among the states’ sovereigns. I guess that could work out in Germany too, but the idea of monarchies and princes and princesses seems to have lost allure.
