I think it could be a slide mechanism. As shown on the below link of a bracelet.

For some reason I had always assumed that, when Princess Diana converted the large sapphire brooch QEQM gave to her, it became the clasp of the new pearl choker.
This set of photos has made me wonder if the large sapphire is a centre piece and that the clasp is actually a slide fastening, possibly embellished with a row of small sapphires. What do others think? Do we have any other photos which might show the back of the choker more clearly?
Occasion here was a function at the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers, London, 1985.
