The Churchill's were notoriously broke. His mother Jenny Churchill, an heiress, was swindled out of a lot of money and whilst Clementine came from a well off family a daughters monetary status came from her husband.

Winston like a lot of people from monied families at that time was clueless about about economising.

I don't think she had any jewellery of great note, probably the obligatory string of pearls. I know in the early sixties she had to sell some of Winston's water colours for money. It was considered an absolute scandal at the time that the wife of one of the countries greatest PM's was having to sell possessions.

I wonder what the necklace is and whom it was from? The stones in it must match the small coloured stones in the tiara.

Thanks MarcA. That will need a bit of research, but I think you may be correct.

I think that Clementine Churchill borrowed all the tiaras she wore.

The photo you posted a link to is fascinating. I have been working on an item about the tiara worn by Churchill's daughter, Mary Soames, for the last couple of days. I have to flee the house now, but I will try to do a post on it tonight.

The occasion was the Nobel Prize evening in Stockholm, December 1953 when Churchill was given the prize for literature. He was unable to attend but Clementine Churchill accepted on his behalf and read his speech.

None of the reports I have read so far say what the jewels were --just a diamond tiara and necklace!!
