Re: The Poltimore tiara. The 1911 photoArchived Message
It is interesting how various photos can deceive our eyes. Barbara was correct in 2014 and the rest of us, myself included, were mistaken.
I am confident that the tiara worn to the 1911 coronation is the Poltimore.
What has intrigued me is who was wearing it. Margaret Beaumont, wife of the 3rd Baron Poltimore or Violet, her daughter who eventually became Lady Onslow.
Photos of Margaret seem to be rare.
If it is Margaret she looks astonishingly like her daughter, Violet. I will post the photos I have of Violet from this era below so others can judge, but I am inclined to think it may be Margaret photographed with the Poltimore tiara and that there has been some retouching to the face and jawline in the coronation photo.
In 1906 Violet married Viscount Cranley, heir to the Earl of Onslow.
The dates above each of the photos below refers to the date of the publication. I am confident of the dating of the 1910 photo as it was used to illustrate a contemporary happening reported in a magazine. I think we can be sure that the one showing Violet in her nurses uniform would have been taken in the war years. But the others have the look of studio portraits which may not have been taken in the year in which they were published.
