Carisbrooke tiara(s)? Posted by Kongetro on August 28, 2018, 5:14 am I have just had another look at a video from the performance at Govent Garden Opera House in 1950 when the French president visited United Kingdom. It is such joy to see all that glitter! Anyway, my attention this time was drawn to one of the ladies in the Royal party. She is wearing an ears-of-wheat tiara and at first I was thinking of Mary Adelaide of Teck's tiara. However, I am not quite able to identify her. I don't think it is a lady-in-waiting, but one of the "minor" royals attending. Could it in fact be the Marchioness of Carisbrooke? If so, is anything known about this tiara? We know that Carisbrooke had the Strawberry Leaf tiara, but did their collection include other pieces? Here is a still photo of the lady in question. I am not totally au fait with the faces of all the ladies in the extended royal family, but I think you are correct and that the lady is the Marchioness of Carisbrooke. Below is another shot showing her face. And I think you are correct and that she is wearing the Teck ears of wheat tiara. By 1950 Princess Alice had reconfigured the tiara yet again and was wearing it in that formation. For example in -- November 1950 (ed for a typo - I had 1952!) And November 1952 I didn't spot Princess Alice in the gathering so it is possible that she had lent the tiara to the Marchioness, who did not have many jewels at her disposal.

During the day I started to wonder if the lady shown at Covent Garden during the French state visit was the Marchioness of Carisbrooke as I felt that perhaps she would have looked older, and so I began to wonder if the lady was Lady May Abel Smith, Princess Alice's daughter. But-- below are some photos of the Marchioness from the same era. I think she was the lady at Covent Garden wearing the Teck ears of wheat tiara. 1951 1952 When I checked the newspapers to see who attended, I found the Marchioness mentioned. A photo of the group in the royal box seems to confirm this. I think the Marchioness is the person behind Alice, Duchess of Gloucester; however, her tiara is not visible, although her trademark 3 strand pearl necklace is. Detail

I have not noted the occasion for the photos of Princess Alice with the ears of wheat tiara, but I suspect that both occasions would have been "private" charity dinners or dances. I will check in the newspapers tomorrow and let you know. Here is another photo from one of the same occasions. This photo from Getty is from 1950 at a theatre evening at the Plaza Theatre, presumably also a charity evening.

Do you mean the lady behind the President of France and on the left of the photo below Kongetro? If so, then I think it is Lady Patricia Ramsay. Her rank in the Order of Precedence would entitle her to this placement, whereas the Duchess of Beaufort would ranker lower. Lady Patricia still ranked as a Royal Princess even though she renounced her title. Other images of her But, I confess I am not 100% sure.
