Queen Mary's diamond collet necklace Posted by Franck on September 7, 2018, 6:52 pm Hello, I do think that the necklace by Queen Mary as Duchess of York ((on the top) is the same necklace which was worn by QM at the coronation in 1937 (the second one from the top)(When I enlarge the photos I can see that the diamonds have the same shape) We know that QM had been given diamonds by the government of SA in 1901 ? Maybe it was this collet necklace (made or given as a gift). However I do not know when the first photo was taken. Maybe, you have press reports about the diamonds given to QM by SA. I get so lost when trying to look at the collet necklaces! You have a really good eye for these things. All that I know is that Queen Mary was given one collet necklace by Edward and Alexandra after the death of the Duke of Clarence. But in the early years of her marriage she was photographed wearing two. I think that the first photo you posted was taken well before 1901. I think that Laura has done some research on the diamonds given to Queen Mary in South Africa.

Re: Queen Mary's diamond collet necklace Posted by Beth on September 8, 2018, 8:07 pm, in reply to "Re: Queen Mary's diamond collet necklace " I have been thinking all day about Franck's observations regarding the collet necklaces and am now certain that he is correct -- that the top necklace/choker worn by Queen Mary in his first photo is the same necklace as HM wore as her top necklace for the coronation in 1937. The shape of the diamonds is the same. The shape of the central diamond is the same as well as those on the side of that. I still think that the first photo was taken well before the 1901 tour of the colonies -- but I don't have a date for the photo -- and I may well be very wrong. I am judging things by the style of Queen Mary's hair and clothes as well as her facial features circa 1901 and later. Well spotted Franck!
