Helene, Duchess of Aosta. Wedding gifts Posted by Beth on September 22, 2018, 5:18 pm Below are some of the wedding gifts given to Princess Helen of Orleans when she married the Duke of Aosta in 1895. One of the more interesting things which the publication of the descriptions of the wedding gifts reveals is that the second large emerald necklace she was photographed wearing was definitely a wedding gift from the groom, the Duke of Aosta. The necklace matches the description in the press -- all the press reports I looked at were the same. The tiara worn by the Duchess in the photo above was the gift of the King and Queen of Italy. The numerous diamonds on spikes were obviously a later addition. Some other gifts. Pearls from the Duke of Aosta. The Duchess is probably wearing them in the photo above also. The emeralds in the necklace the Duke of Aosta gave Princess Helene are stunning. It is a shame there are no colour photos of her wearing the jewel. It is interesting that the tiara worn today is not the same as the original, so perhaps Malluu was correct and it has been rebuilt. Wedding gifts" Maridje has sent in some information and photos of the various ladies wearing the emerald and diamond necklace given to Princess Helene as a wedding gift. (I hope I have given all the information correctly!) Thank you Maridje! The necklace has remained with descendants of Princess Helene (Elena di Savoia, Duchess of Aosta, 1871-1951). Her eldest son, Amedo di Savoia, 3rd Duke of Aosta (1898-1942) married Anne d'Orleans (daughter of the Duc de Guise). The necklace was inherited by Princess Margherita di Savoia, the eldest daughter of Amedo di Savoia. Princess Margherita married Archduke Robert of Austria-Este, the second son of Emperor Charles and Empress Zita of Austria. In recent years the necklace has been worn by Princess Astrid of Belgium, wife of Archduke Lorenz, the eldest son of Margherita and Robert.

Wedding gifts" What I find quite fascinating is how the emeralds look so dark in the Helene photograph but so light and luminescent in the modern photograph. I wonder if they were touched up in the original photograph or perhaps it's just lighting and camera technology.
