Princess Anne's Wedding Ball in 1973
Posted by The Royal Watcher on October 30, 2018, 1:41 pm
There have been glittering Balls ahead of the weddings of most members of the British Royal Family up until the 1980s! Though usually private, with few pictures, I've found a picture of now King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia arriving at Princess Anne's Wedding Ball in 1973! Are there any pictures of other guests? or reports about the Tiaras?
What about the wedding balls of other members of the Royal Family??
These are some of the Foreign Royal Guests that attended the wedding, and were probably at the Ball the previous evening as well!
Is that Princess Grace in the front row in white or Soraya of Iran with Breatrix behind in the fur coat & “hat”?
Who is the woman in sky blue and do we know anything about the brooch?

That should be Princess Grace in white. The Lady is skyblue is Sonja of Norway.

The brooch worn by the then Crown Princess Sonja is the one Queen Maud received as a wedding gift from the Draper's Company in 1896. It is one of the most worn brooches in the collection of the Norwegian Royal Family.

In fact it looks like the Crown Princess of Norway was wearing two brooches that day: the Drapers' Company Pearl brooch on her coat and then another smaller brooch on her dress:

It appears Crown Princess Sonja was wearing Queen Alexandra's Diamond and Pearl Drop Brooch, which was notably worn at Princess Martha Louise's Christening!

Funny how a minor royal's nuptial attracted so many Kings and Queens and yet same is so different in present day times. The second son meaning the Duke of Sussex wedding did not attract any major or minor royals from any of the reigning houses of Europe, nor did his cousin Princess Eugenie's nuptials. Is it that the Princess Royal was more in tuned with tradition and her extended royal blood lines? Or was their just more respect to go around in those days?
Regards,
Dave.

I think it was to do more with the fact that the Princess Royal’s wedding was much more of a state occasion. These days they are much more scaled down in the UK. Family connections are also, with the other European royals, much reduced.

Thanks MarcA, but just look at the other mainland European royal houses. Take for instance the now defunct Greek royal house. When they have a nuptial almost all send multiple members of the reigning houses to be in attendance. I do recall the Swedish weddings apart from the Crown Princess Victoria's, you saw so many from the reigning royal houses and same is also evident at rated anniversaries such as the King of Norway's and Sweden's birthdays or some special anniversary. Not to mention the Danish Crown Prince as he just celebrated some special anniversary as well. So is it down to the individual person to decide, or does it has something to do with schedules? I note that just prior to the announcement of the Duke of Sussex marriage, he visited the Queen of Denmark, you get what I mean?
Regards,
Dave.
