QEQM wearing Queen Alexandra's emerald earrings Posted by Beth on November 27, 2018, 8:27 pm For a government reception at Lancaster House for the Italian state visit in May 1958 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wore Queen Alexandra's emerald earrings with the Greville emerald necklace, the Greville tiara and Queen Alexandra's emerald bracelet. Detail of the earrings. They have the same shape as the earrings worn by the Duchess of Cornwall The earrings we refer to as the Greville emerald earrings hang lower and are a different shape. Below is a comparison of the earrings. The cabochons on the left are Queen Alexandra's, while the earrings on the right are the faceted stones we refer to as the Greville earrings.

At times the press also talked about an emerald chain. Whether it and the second necklace were one and the same jewel is unclear to me. The only photo I have of Mrs Greville wearing emeralds towards the end of her life is from May 1937 Even when the section with Mrs Greville is enlarged, it is unclear to me whether she is wearing 2 emerald necklaces or if the one she is wearing has pendants. Perhaps someone with a keener eye than mine might hazard a guess. It is possible that the second emerald necklace was the choker she wore to the Devonshire House Ball, but I suspect that by the late 1930s the choker would have been remodelled, as the press spoke of a necklace, not a choker or collar. However, the necklace seems different to the one worn by QEQM. I am convinced that she had several emerald necklaces.
