QEQM. Ruby bow brooch Posted by Beth on January 9, 2019, 6:47 am In October 1960 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother lent her ruby bow brooch for a display of jewels held in conjunction with a charity ball to raise money for the St John's Ambulance. I wonder how often HM lent this rarely photographed piece? QEQM wearing it for the French State Visit in 1950 Princess Margaret wearing it in 1990 I think that QEQM also wore it to hold her robe on her left shoulder for the State Opening of Parliament in 1948 --but I know that others disagree.

Ruby bow brooch" I believe that the ruby bow brooch was one of the pieces Mrs Greville left to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Apart from the flamboyant style (bringing to mind the style of the Greville diamond bow brooch featured in Hugh Robert's book) I have the following cutting from 1937, which indicates that Mrs Greville did own a large ruby bow brooch. Ruby bow brooch" I doubt if either of the bracelets worn by Princess Margaret were Greville pieces. Both were auctioned and, as there was no hesitation in giving provenance details for some other items, I think Mrs Greville would have been mentioned if she originally owned the bracelets. Her name would increase the value. What we do know, from the list of sources cited by Hugh Roberts inThe Queen's Diamonds, is that Christie's did an inventory and valuation of Mrs Greville's jewels. There are several ways to gauge prices circa 1930s to 1940s. Rather than cite things like the cost of housing, bread, milk etc wages are a good indicator. Various libraries have wage records. Some are accessible online. So if one wants to gauge the value of one's jewel collection I think the insurance would be a good starting point.
