I am fairly sure that QEII had worn the smaller Nizam roses as a set of clips during her Commonwealth tour in 1953-54. I'll have a look at my photos. I suspect that the roses may always have been detachable.

I don't seem to have earlier photos but this may just be because I have not collected them all. For well known and often worn items, it is impossible to note all.
