A portrait of Mrs Plant, later Mrs Rovensky, wearing the celebrated pearls.
Hans Nadelhoffer outlined the saga of the pearls in his tome on Cartier.
If the pearls were to surface at an auction today, I have no doubt they would be the centre of intense bidding. Then, we would also have a modern photo of the gems showing the orient and lustre.
I've always wanted to see what the pearls he did the swap for looked like. Cartier now, though not at the time, definitely got the better end of the bargain.
Do we have any idea where the pearls are now? Have they ever come up for auction or sale since they were "purchased" for Mrs Plant - Rovensky.

After Mrs Rovensky's death her jewels including the pearls (sold as 2 separate strands) were auctioned in 1957. No one seems to know where they are today. They may have changed hands discreetly numerous times or they may have remained with the original buyer.
Thank you Beth. Even in black and white they look absolutely exquisite.
