Princess Patricia of Connaught / Lady Patricia Ramsay's Diamond Tiara Posted by The Royal Watcher on March 17, 2019, 2:39 pm Over the past couple of years, I've been gathering pictures of Princess Patricia of Connaught / Lady Patricia Ramsay wearing this Diamond Tiara, HERE, at a variety of occasions, which I published today to mark the Anniversary of her Birth! She appears to have worn this Tiara at events after her wedding till the Coronation in 1953, after which she usually wore Princess Helena Victoria’s Honeysuckle Tiara! Since it wasn't included in the auction of her jewels, it probably still belongs to her daughter-in-law, Lady Saltoun, and granddaughters. Despite its antique design, the Tiara doesn’t appear to be a Connaught or Ramsay piece, but it might have been a wedding gift from her British/Swedish Royal Relatives. Was a list of her Wedding Gifts published?

Amongst the gifts from Queen Alexandra there was a "diamond pin" and someone else gave her a diamond ring, but jade ornaments seem to have been Princess Patricia's favourite item at the time. Photos and the auction of Princess Patricia's jewels after her death give some clues to what jewels she inherited from her mother after the latter's death in 1917. The Duchess of Connaught also left Princess Patricia a large sum of money, so either the tiara could have been one belonging to the Duchess or Princess Patricia may have purchased it herself or been given it as say a 21st birthday present. She definitely was wearing a tiara before her wedding.

When Princess Patricia married, she wore a large diamond maple leaf brooch on the centre of her bodice. It is not noticeable on most of the photos circulating on the internet, and so it appears to have been completely overlooked. I have carefully checked all the various jewellery sites and no one has written about it (as far as I can see) According to the UK media in 1919 the brooch had been given to the Duchess of Connaught by a group of personal friends at the time she left Canada in 1916. That probably explains why it is not seen in the various photos of the Duchess. During the war both the Duchess and Princess Patricia took a special interest in Canadian troops who fought in WWI. As everyone knows Princess Patricia had a newly formed Canadian regiment named after her -- the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, and members of this unit provided a guard of honour at her wedding. Princess Patricia wearing the maple leaf brooch. Detail The veil worn by Princess Patricia has an interesting history having originally belonged to Queen Charlotte. Presumably it was among the Queen's possessions which were sold to provide money for her daughters. The irony of how the veil came back to a royal was not lost on the press. Lady Patricia gave the Connaught Pearl Brooch, HERE, to her great niece and goddaughter, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, as an 18th Birthday gift in 1958!

The Wedding Dress went on display at Calgary's military museum, but the veil is not included. Princess Patricia wore the Pearl Tiara given as a gift to Queen Victoria from the Aga Khan, before she got married. The fate of that tiara, as well as the diamond scroll tiara worn by the Duchess below is unknown, so they might have been broken up to create newer piece!
