Queen Victoria and Queen Adelaide's fringe tiara/necklace Posted by Beth on April 3, 2019, 7:48 pm For the wedding of Princess Augusta of Cambridge, Queen Victoria wore Queen Adelaide's fringe tiara/necklace as a tiara. In her journal entry the Queen referred to it as "a diadem of my diamond fringes..." In the following year for the opening of the Royal Exchange in October, Queen Victoria recorded that she wore her diamond fringe and necklace arranged as a diadem. Behind this, perched on top of her hair, which was piled up, was Queen Charlotte's small diamond crown. Queen Victoria's sketch shows that she wore the fringe tiara in a more pronounced halo style than in the paintings below.

We know that Victoria wore these diamonds as a tiara and as a bodice ornament outlining the neckline of her gown, as she did for the wedding of Queen Mary in 1893. Although Queen Victoria used images from this photo session for her Jubilee in 1897, the Royal Collection is clear that the photos were taken on the occasion of George V's and Queen Mary's wedding in 1893. I am only just now starting to appreciate how Queen Victoria used parts of her jewels in various forms. Her journal entry for the opening of the Royal Exchange shows that she wore parts of her "big diadem taken to pieces & used to trim the dress..." The question is which diadem? The Diamond Diadem or the Regal circlet? The extensive press reporting of this event has not provided any answers -- probably because reporters were kept at a respectful distance.
