It was the brooch in the photo I initially posted which got me wondering which jewels I was looking at. When I could not place the brooch, I began to wonder if the central stone in the tiara was not the cabochon emerald - yet there was the stone in the necklace to consider!! But now I think that OmerH has solved the brooch query -- except that in the original photo the setting around the top stone still looks somewhat different. Perhaps all my queries are because of the poor quality of the photo. How I wish modern digital photography was available in previous times!! Below is another photo where I think Princess Alice is wearing the same brooch as in OmerH's photos -- except we cannot see the top half of the brooch, just the pendant peeking out under the Duchess' fur cape. 1958

If I only saw the top part of the photo I would have said it was the emerald setting of the tiara because the stone looks like a cabochon. But the necklace and brooch tell a different story. Maybe the Duchess was playing with coloured stones in her jewel box??

It is an interesting idea OmerH, but I suspect that the issue is the poor photography of the times (compared to modern) and the even worse printing of photos in newspapers. But, I would give anything to see a modern photo of that scene. I wonder what it would reveal? On the other hand, Occam's Razor suggests that the gemstones are the pink topazes, so...!
