Which brooch did Princess Alexandra loose? Posted by Beth on June 21, 2019, 7:25 pm When I was trying to find information about the brooch Princess Alexandra wore on her hat when visiting the British Industries Fair in Stockholm at the end of May 1962 (J-F's second photo below), I saw the following. (There were several identical reports) I am going to give the details in case anyone has access to photos or newspapers which might have a photo of Princess Alexandra at the ball. The report above was from a paper dated 30 May 1962, so I assume that the date of the ball was 28 May 1962. The occasion was a combined banquet and ball given by the Federation of British Industries at the City Hall, Stockholm. I would love to be able to identify which brooch the Princess wore as all the reports say that it came from Queen Mary.

I discovered the link above just days ago. Never know the brooch came from Queen Mary. There's several pictures available from both The Princess arrival at Stockholm Airport and from the fair itself, but I haven't been able to find pictures from the ball in question. I think I have been able to find a photo taken at the ball hosted by King Gustav in Sweden on this occasion: If so it is the pearl brooch that was lost but fortunately later recovered. It is one of my favourites of Princess Alexandra's brooches. The date fits with 1962 since I believe that the flowers in her hair were incorporated into her tiara at the time of her wedding the year after. The view through the window, although a bit blurry, definitely matches that from Stockholm Town Hall. What an amazing exercise in co-operation/pooling of knowledge etc this has been! I noticed that the Flickr site dates the photo to 28 May 1962, which is the day of the banquet/ball Princess Alexandra attended and lost her brooch. https://www.flickr.com/photos/21116944@N08/36144807272 If the press was correct then this brooch came from Queen Mary (as well as the oblong diamond brooch) I don't think that we have seen Queen Mary photographed wearing it. It is not part of the Duchess of Gloucester's pearl and diamond stomacher which was left to the Duchess of Teck. The Duchess of Gloucester's pearl and diamond stomacher.

After I saw this video (which I have also posted below) I realised that it is possible that Princess Alexandra may have worn the pearl brooch at the front of her sash and the oblong diamond brooch we know belonged to Queen Mary to secure her sash at the back. In this video look carefully at 3.04 to 3.07 when there is a brief glimpse of the Princess wearing both jewels. Apologies but I cannot do a still image of the back of the sash. My thinking is that I suspect the Princess would have noticed immediately if the brooch at the front had fallen, but may not have been as aware of one from her back falling, especially if she were dancing.

I made some captures: First : yes, the Princess wore the rectangle diamond brooch to secure the sash at back : Secondly : Alexandra wore her grand mother's brooch at the beginning of the video !!!! I guess again for sapphires or maybe amethysts but certainly not rubies nor emeralds: Thirdly: The central diamond and pearl element of her now favorite choker was formerly the clasp of a pearl necklace : Have a nice day ! How wonderful that you were able to capture the image of Princess Alexandra with Queen Mary's brooch holding her sash at the back of the dress. Try as I might I could not capture that! Congratulations on spotting the clasp on Princess Alexandra's pearl necklace. I'll comment on the brooch worn in Japan in the other thread below; otherwise things will get too confused.
