Finally, I found high definition photos which show that the pendant has the cypher of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria's cypher The cypher in a presentation jewel I wonder how the Duchess acquired this jewel? I don't recollect seeing Princess Alice ever wearing it.

Princess Marie Louise is one potential source. An interesting possibility Marc. So many jewels from the Victorian era were multi purpose with detachable fittings for conversions.

Pendant worn on black pearls" I wonder if it has always been a pendant or perhaps was a brooch/label pin/order or perhaps a combination of the former and the latter? I must admit I don't feel it works with the pearls as it seems a little lost. It's unusual as the Duchess normally wears her jewels with great style. Pendant worn on black pearls" This jewel strongly reminds me of a mourning jewel. Black enamel diamonds and pearls in a mourning brooch to be pinned at the centre of a high collar.
