Primrose family tiaras (Earls of Rosebery)
Posted by Beth on July 28, 2019, 7:00 am
When the then Earl of Rosebery married Hannah de Rothschild in 1878, the press, as usual for the times, had lists of the principal presents to the bride.
In describing the gifts of the groom to the bride all the newspapers made a distinction between the Primrose family jewels and the new jewels which the groom had commissioned.
Most of the reports make it clear that there were 2 headpieces which formed part of the family jewels. One was described as a tiara; the other, sometimes called a coronet, was described as a comb.
It seems clear that the tiara, variously described as having margureites or jasmines is the jewel which, in recent, times has been worn by Lady Dalmeny.

Dorothy Reid, later Countess of Rosebery, wearing the tiara for her wedding in 1955
The mystery is which is the jewel which was described as a "comb" in the 1878 press reports?
Unfortunately it might be some time before we see the floral tiara worn again given that Lord and Lady Dalmeny have divorced.
