Questions about a couple of Royal Earrings Posted by The Royal Watcher on August 6, 2019, 5:43 pm I have published a couple of articles on some Royal Earrings these past few days, and have some questions, through which I would like to learn more from your research and observations! I know part of it became a sautoir, but has it been suggested that the Queen Mother’s Sapphire Fringe Earrings, HERE, could have come from the necklace of the Sapphire Demi-Parure she received as a Wedding Gift from Queen Mary? The size of the stones seem to match. Another article was on Princess Irene of The Netherlands’ Ruby Earrings, HERE, to mark her 80th Birthday, which look antique in design though are of unknown provenance (I've read about some obscure links to Queen Sophie). Were they also given at the same time when Princess Irene controversially received the Dutch Ruby Peacock Parure as a gift from her grandmother, Queen Wilhelmina, on her sister, Princess Beatrix’s, birthday?? We talked about Queen Geraldine’s Ruby Earrings, HERE, a few months ago, HERE, when they reappeared on Crown Princess Elia after more than 80 years. What's odd is that these earrings were described as being among the auction of the Albanian Royal jewels. Were they not sold, or have they been recently reacquired?

But how to prove it? If QEQM used stones from the necklace to make the earrings, which sapphires would have been used? We know so little for certain about what happened to that necklace. The assumption is that HM used the diamonds and sapphires to make the sapphire sautoir but, as Franck once pointed out to me, Hugh Roberts does not say that QEQM used the necklace to make the sautoir.

QEQM's earrings" On trying to enlarge the sautoir picture and seeing QEQM with King George VI I was reminded that of a comment in Field (p146 of 1987 edition, 2002 reprint)..that "King George the V1 loved sapphires and has a connoisseur's appreciation of the stones". Field goes onto to note that he bought many pieces of sapphire jewellery for his wife from Cartier. Therefore it is possible that the original necklace may still exist..although the stones in the Sautoir look similar in shape. Also I am not sure that the second son of the King would have been able to purchase sautoir. If I recollect correctly, I think that Hugh Roberts said the sautoir was made in 1929 (apologies I really should have checked). If the sautoir was made in 1929 then I suspect that the then Duke of York would not have been splashing money around as George V had advised all the royal family to moderate their spending.
