Duchess of Gloucester. Her style with jewels Posted by Beth on August 16, 2019, 2:50 pm Would others like to contribute to a thread on the Duchess of Gloucester and her style of wearing jewels? Often she wears numerous items; yet, she never looks flamboyant or over accessorised. Sometimes her creative use of jewels surprises me. For example -- It wasn't until I enlarged the image that I realised she was wearing what I call her circle brooches, which appear to be made of rock crystal and diamonds. Detail Below is a photo showing a more conventional use of these brooches, amongst the most frequently worn of her jewels. As a hat ornament What strikes others about the Duchess' jewels?

Her style with jewels" One of the things which attracts my attention is the Duchess' use of brooches on her hats. Dragon fly brooch on hat Flower brooch on hat. A red stone brooch on Remembrance Day At the Vatican A badge on hat on Remembrance Day A heart shaped diamond and onyx (??) brooch sometimes seen at funerals and memorials. I don't think we have ever discussed this brooch previously. Detail Detail

Her style with jewels" What an incredible set of photos, thank you The Royal Watcher. The Duchess' jewel casket obviously has some very interesting jewels. One which I have never noticed until today is a set of moonstone (?) or rock crystal (?) cuff links. I have looked at the photo in question so often, but my eye has always been drawn to the necklace. Detail I wonder what their provenance is? I wouldn't rule out Queen Mary or Henry, Duke of Gloucester. I mention Queen Mary because she received a number of cuff links as wedding gifts. As ladies then wore them with their riding habits (and sometimes with day dresses, depending on the whims of fashion) these could have come from Queen Mary.

Cuff links" Normally the Duchess wears the large pink topaz brooch pinned to the centre of her bodice for evening functions. In 1981 she wore it on Christmas Day pinned on the shoulder of her coat.

Large pink topaz brooch" The Duchess has been photographed wearing 2 aquamarine pendants. The earliest photos I have of the more elaborate pendants date from 2011 on Garter Day. The aquamarine appears to be heart shaped and the jewel has a delicate diamond ribbon from which the aquamarine hangs. Detail In 2012 the Duchess wore it for formal functions associated with QEII's Diamond Jubilee. Leaving St Paul's Cathedral 2012. Inside the Cathedral Detail The second aquamarine pendant is less elaborate. Worn at Ascot 2013

I had never noticed the pearl bracelet before with what appears to be a portrait in the clasp. They appear to be a pair of bracelets that the duchess usually wears with Queen Mary's pearl choker. Does anyone have any better pictures and or any provenance about these pieces?

I had never noticed the second one previously. I suspect that these bracelets came to the Gloucesters via Queen Mary, but have no proof. I checked the will of Mary, Duchess of Gloucester but, while she had bracelets with portraits, a pair of pearl bracelets with portraits was not amongst the jewels left to Mary Cambridge, Duchess of Teck. Did anyone else notice what looks like a jewelled B surmounted by a small crown on the Duchess' handbag? I also suspect that the pink topaz bracelet worn by the Duchess of Gloucester came from Queen Mary, but once again have no proof.
