Queen Maud. Wedding gifts. Vifte tiara Posted by Beth on August 25, 2019, 8:47 am In 2016 Dawn of the RJWMB posted a sketch from a US newspaper of the gift given to Queen Maud by Mr Alfred and Mr and Mrs Leopold de Rothschild. Unfortunately, those images are no longer available on the board. Vincent Meylan then made the connection that the Rothschild gift was what is commonly called the Vifte tiara. Previously, it had been argued that it was an eighteenth birthday present from Queen Victoria. It is a more accurate sketch, particularly in regard to proportions. The Vifte tiara worn as a necklace. I have rotated the image to make it easier to compare the items. Comparison When Dawn posted the first sketch (which allowed for identification of the jewel) she gave her source, so I was able to take a cutting from the same newspaper. Vifte tiara" It's difficult to find a good photo of the Vifte tiara, but the common description as "tiny" is not accurate. It might be the frame (necklace) of the tiara that makes it a bit difficult to wear without covering it in hair. The design is beautiful, and it sparkles like fireworks when seen in motion. Some of the news reports of the time mentioned that Alfred Rothschild personally selected the diamonds. Whatever the situation, it is clearly made with very high quality diamonds.

Certainly not easy to be worn as a tiara nowadays because it's rather short and high and clearly designed for another type of hairstyle than fashionable today, but it would nevertheless benefit if it was seperated from the necklace when being worn as a tiara. Judging from the photo below this is probably very easy to do, the mechanism seems to be some sort of latches on both sides of the tiara part. It was just perfection as a necklace on Crown Princess Mette-Marit in her younger years. But she also wore it very convincingly as a tiara (or a rather substantial hair comb) for King Harald's birthday celebrations in 2017.
