It would likely have caused a huge scandal Posted by Janet on October 12, 2019, 3:21 am, in reply to "Re: Queen Victoria Sapphire Coronet" had the Queen or Prince of Wales purchased a tiara costing £5 million, the amount that needed to be raised to prevent the tiara being sold abroad. Queen Mary was the one responsible for it leaving the main royal line as she gave it as a wedding gift to her daughter. Some sections of the press would have had a field day if either the Queen or the Prince of Wales had purchased the tiara. When King George V gave Queen Victoria's sapphire parure to Mary, Princess Royal as a wedding gift, it would have been with full knowledge that it was leaving the main line of the royal family.

Also ridiculously over priced Posted by Janet on October 12, 2019, 10:40 pm, in reply to "Re: It would likely have caused a huge scandal" I am not sure who was prepared to pay £5 million for it, but clearly it was not worth that much and its value has been ridiculously inflated because of its provenance in much the same way that Princess Margaret's Poltimore or Elizabeth Taylor's tiara were. There is already enough in the Royal Collection associated with Queen Victoria to make such a purchase unnecessary in my view. While I agree that it was a great thing it was preserved for the British nation, it is much better suited to being held in a museum. If the Queen or Prince of Wales were to have a spare £5 million to spend on enhancing the royal jewel collection, I could identify far better purchases for them! I wouldn't even charge them a finders fee!
