Australian fires Posted by Beth on November 12, 2019, 7:51 am The situation is so dire in parts of Australia that I am going to break my own rules and go off topic by mentioning the catastrophic fire conditions which some parts of Australia are facing today and tomorrow, as a number of the board members are Australian. Sadly, only a few post. To those who live in the vulnerable parts of New South Wales (including parts of Sydney) my thoughts are with you. I hope that all come through safely. We have a few members who live in Queensland. Hopefully, no one lives in the areas experiencing direct threats. For those who are interested, myself and 3 others live in Brisbane. We are not under direct threat but, like every other Aussie, I am very conscious of the situation others are in. Today the nation is holding its collective breath. Thank God for our firies and emergency service personnel!! Words cannot describe the incredible effort they are putting into fighting fires day after day.

From time to time here in Germany we see tv-reports about the catastrophic drought and the servere fires in Australia. We can not imagine what a farmer feels, who sees the skeletons of his cattle in the dry pasture, or the people who lose everything in the fires or even fear for their lives. So I hope that you and all the other colleagues in this forum are safe and a miracle ends this drought and the fires. Here we say "ich drücke euch die Daumen" which means I´ll keep my fingers crossed...

I'm in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and in terms of the fires ringing the city about as far away as you can get but I woke up this morning to the smell of smoke. I hope the wind finally dies down. It will make a big difference if it does. The Hunter valley is in a bad way though. What an incredible effort the fire fighters and emergency personnel have made. But the danger period is not yet over, as conditions will deteriorate again over the weekend. I was very glad to hear that Kat Max and MarcA are ok.
