Queen Elizabeth in Canada 1957. Did the press get it wrong? Posted by Beth on December 6, 2019, 8:19 pm From time to time I have tried to find photos of the so called Quebec Shield brooch which was presented to QEII in 1951. This is the Quebec Shield Many newspapers speculated that HM would take it to Canada during her 1957 visit, so I have tried to find it. Alas, despite reports that HM took and wore the brooch I cannot find anything which might resemble the Quebec Shield. Then I found press reports of the Queen wearing the Maple leaf brooch which, depending on the reports in various newspapers, was given to her either in 1951 or 1939 during the visit of George VI and QEQM. For example And That set me on a hunt for better images, as I felt that HM was wearing one of Queen Victoria's bow brooches. What I found. A video of HM's arrival And this photo. What do others think? A Maple leaf? Or one of Queen Victoria's bow brooches?

Definitely QV Bow Brooch - not a Maple Leaf in sight. My Guess is that, if HM did wear the Quebec Shield , it would have been only at a Quebec event - not a national event.

Thanks Bryce. From what I can see Queen Elizabeth didn't visit Quebec during the 1957 tour, so perhaps HM didn't wear the Quebec Shield brooch in 1957.

Did the press get it wrong?" I will post a series of images showing some of the jewels QEII wore in Canada in 1957. The first shows HM at a ceremonial at the War Memorial. Is HM wearing a maple leaf brooch on her hat? Could it be the one given to her as a wedding gift by one of the Canadian groups? I am thinking of the one which has a diamond set vein in the middle of the maple leaf -- apologies I don't have a separate photo of this brooch, although I have seen one some where. What other brooches is she wearing?

HM's first live TV broadcast" Thanks Beth for these intriguing photos. The earrings in the picture above I think are legacy pieces from the former QM the Queen's grandmother. Some of the jewels in the other pictures look different due to the black and white colour but I cant seem to think HM wearing new jewels as she has mainly stuck to legacy pieces over the period of her reign. HM does not seem to indulge in wearing many of the other stately gifts she may have received while on the throne. Regards, Dave. I also do not recognize the diamond brooches. Can it be the double rose diamond brooch(es) described by Leslie Field. It is maybe another mystery solved ??? Is this a Maple leaf brooch?" I think you are correct there is a brooch on her hat for the war memorial visit. Rather unusual for her. But not necessarily a maple leaf. Perhaps one of the Greville Ivy Leaf brooches, which she did wear on her hat on other occasions: http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-greville-ivy-leaf-brooches.html I am uncertain as to the two brooches she is wearing. Perhaps the couple of gold and sapphire flowers she had from an early age (I cannot find a picture just now)? Or since this i a major visit - two Hyderabad diamond roses?
