Fascinating discussion on Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara
Posted by Beth on December 10, 2019, 7:09 am
For those who have not seen it, Vincent Meylan has posted an intriguing theory on the history of the Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara.
The mystery is what happened to the tiara in between when it was sold by Princess Jutta of Montenegro and when it reappeared at auction at Christie's, Geneva.
Vincent Meylan argues that it was owned by the late Rajmata of Patiala, Mehtab Kaur.
Congratulations Vincent! I think you have solved the mystery.
This photo is dated 1938 by some. It was the year of the Rajmata's wedding.
Re: Fascinating discussion on Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara
Thanks....fascinating I agree bravo Vincent. On an aside I really like the way the Duchess of Cambridge wears this tiara. It works so well with Queen Alexandra's necklace. Also a very savvy choice for her given it is so closely related to Diana.

Re: Fascinating discussion on Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara
Thanks for sharing Beth, is Vincent postulating that the tiara worn by the late Rajmata of Patiala, Mehtab Kaur is the same tiara worn by the DoCam? I thought the tiara worn by the DoCam was a recreation by QM as she had seen her grandmother or mother having one like it and she thought she should have a similar one. Please clarify.
Regards,
Dave.

Re: Fascinating discussion on Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara
Vincent Meylan mentioned several versions of the Lovers Knot tiara, all of which appear to have been based on the one owned by Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge
It is the one made for Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge which he says was the one owned by the royals of Patiala (It was worn by the late Rajmata of Patiala.) See Vincent Meylan's Instagram site at https://www.instagram.com/p/B51AmIBo884/
Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge was born Princess Augusta of Hesse Kassel in 1797.
In 1818 she married Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, a son of George III.
Below is an image of Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge wearing what is commonly referred to as the Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara
This tiara then went to her eldest daughter, Augusta of Mecklenburg Strelitz

It was then passed to Augusta of Mecklenburg Strelitz's granddaughter, Princess Jutta.
Queen Mary commissioned a very similar tiara in 1913. It was based on the one owned by her maternal grandmother, Augusta Duchess of Cambridge.
(Augusta of Mecklenburg Strelitz was Queen Mary's aunt)
Originally Queen Mary's tiara had 19 upright pearls.

Later, Queen Mary removed the upright pearls and replaced them with diamonds.
The tiara was subsequently worn by QEII and by Princess Diana and is now worn by the current Duchess of Cambridge.

As far as I know the second tiara is always referred to as Queen Mary's Lovers Knot tiara.
