Gifts given to Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in Newcastle in 1906
Posted by Beth on December 21, 2019, 8:04 pm
In July 1906 Edward VII and Queen Alexandra visited Newcastle to open a bridge and a college, and duly received several gifts.
For opening the bridge Edward VII received a silver model of the structure.
A better view of the silver model can be seen in this sketch.
Edward VII opened the college with this key, a gold key which I think was presented to him (but I cannot now remember the precise details).
From the view point of many on this board, I think that the following two gifts will be of more interest.
A cigarette case presented to Edward VII
It had a portrait of the young Edward VIII, the case being embellished with diamonds and rubies.
As the description above noted Queen Alexandra was presented with a locket/pendant containing a portrait of Princess Mary (later Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood).
I would love to have seen a photograph of the locket, but am grateful that one newspaper carried a sketch of the jewel.
I wonder what happened to it? Was it given to the Princess Royal? Perhaps it is still in the Harewood collection.
During this visit to Newcastle the press commented (as always) on how gracious Queen Alexandra and how happy she looked.
The photo below would suggest that, at least on this occasion, the press was not engaging in hyperbole.

Thanks for this article Beth. I'd love to see what they look like in colour.
Regards,
Dave.
