An interesting press article concerning Mrs Ronald Greville's jewels from Vincent + A new list of je Posted by Franck on December 30, 2019, 11:30 pm Vincent has written a very interesting article concerning Mrs Ronald Greville's jewels in the famous newspapers. It is worth reading ! Vincent says, that at the end of Mrs Greville in 1942, a collection of 76 jewels was given to Queen Elizabeth as a bequest. It is the first time that we have a complete list of jewels given to QE. The first best approximation of the total collection of jewels'size comes from the Roberts book, which placed the collection at over sixty pieces. He also says that the diamond bandeau worn by Princess Anne in 2005 comes from the Bequest. Perhaps, Vincent had an access to the archives. Last but not least, I have also made a more exhausted list of jewels owned by Mrs Greville during her life. Please do not hesitate to correct me if need. It is entirely possible that their is another diamond tiara from this bequest if one reads it right making it a total of four tiaras. Thanks again. Regards, Dave. I like the way you have structured the list, because we all know that Mrs Greville had some jewels broken up to create new items. For example whether all her wedding gifts have survived intact is debatable, but she may have had a sentimental streak. One of the things no one seems to discuss are her mother's jewels. She was reported to have superb diamonds. Were they kept in tact for sentimental reason? An inventory (with valuations) was made by Christie's after Mrs Greville's death which, according to Hugh Roberts, is now in the Royal Archives. Another list would have been submitted for probate, but unfortunately those documents were destroyed years ago. (That is standard practice in some government departments and has nothing to do with privacy for the Royal Family)

Vincent wrote an article in Point de vue in December about the jewels worn by QEII at the Diplomatic reception. It is obvious that we can have repeats (rings for example or pearl necklaces). However, further to the press reports she would have had on least 3 diamond rings + an emerald ring. To answer Dave, she had at least 5 different tiaras and not 4 including the emerald one. I have tried to make a list further to the information given to us. Beth, you are right as saying that her mother had superb diamonds. I should have done a section with her mother's collection of jewels. Last but not least, I now think that the long spray of Virginia creeper is the huge diamond brooch given to Princess Margaret as a wedding gift from her mother. Mrs Ronald Greville would have kept this jewel for sentimental reason. Thank you so much again for your kind answers. I am looking for more descriptions of the jewel referred to as a Virginia Creeper, which Mrs Greville's father gave to her as a wedding gift. There are numerous similar reports of each of the descriptions. I suspect that the various reports depended on which syndicated news service each paper subscribed to. This one talks of large brilliants (9) set in oak leaves. But most papers talk of a Virginia creeper. Whether the leaves of one can be easily mistaken for the other is something I will leave to others to decide. This report is interesting as it states that the jewel could be divided into 3 separate items and could be worn as a hair ornament as well as a corsage ornament. So it is possible that the large diamond floral brooch worn by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and later worn by Princess Margaret was part of the Greville Virginia creeper corsage ornament -- but do the leaf sections of that brooch resemble Virginia creeper leaves? I think that this needs a lot more investigation. Another jewel which may be a possibility is the one which most people say is the Snowden tiara. What evidence do we have that it was actually given to Princess Margaret by Lord Snowden? It breaks into 3 pieces -- but do the leaves resemble those of the Virginia creeper. Does it have large diamonds in it? Would there be 9 large diamonds?

Earliest reference I have to emeralds belonging to Empress Josephine. Posted by Beth on January 1, 2020, 7:27 pm, in reply to "Descriptions of the Virginia Creeper jewel" I also checked all the references I have to Mrs Greville wearing a necklace or emeralds which had belonged to Empress Josephine: the earliest date I have so far is 1912. I cannot find any reference in the media to emeralds, previously belonging to Empress Josephine, having been sold in or around 1912. There are references in the media to emeralds belonging to Empress Josephine being on the market in earlier periods -- most notably circa 1814 when her son was trying to sell some of her jewels in England. Once again, this is an avenue which needs further investigation. If such a necklace was sold circa 1814, it is possible that any other change in ownership might have been completely private and there will not be any mention of it in the press.
