Lady Mary Stuart Walker. Photos of other jewels Posted by Beth on February 28, 2020, 8:18 am I thought I would post these images showing Lady Mary Stuart Walker wearing other jewels, which I have not positively identified as yet. Unfortunately, Lady Mary seemed to avoid the cameras, so there aren't many images. 1937. At the Anglo-Finnish Ball These may be her mother's emeralds. Detail 1937 Detail 1937 1955 at her daughter's engagement party 1935. Gown was described as geranium red.

Photos of other jewels" In 1955 Lady Mary Stuart Walker's daughter, Iona, married Baron Christian von Oppenheim. Below are wedding photos from the UK press. The tiara worn by the bride was a gift from her parents. I wonder whether this tiara belonged to Lady Mary or if she and her husband purchased it? In 1957 Lady Mary's second daughter, Helia, married Dr Frederick Villeneuve Nicolle who practised in Montreal. According to the press they lived in Montreal after the wedding. Tatler described the diamond and pearl tiara as a family item. I wonder if the earrings worn by Iona in 1955 were part of the tiara or if a coordinating pair existed?

And the pearl tiara looks quite substantial! The sisters might have worn the same earrings for their weddings – the lower part of one of the pearl drops is visible in both photos of Helia – so I assume a coordinating pair existed.

Daughters' wedding tiaras" The tiara worn by Helia Walker on her wedding day looked familiar to me, and I suddenly remembered an auction at Koller Auctions in Zurich back in 2017. The pearl and diamond necklace/tiara with matching earrings was made around 1890 and sold for CHF 234 500. The lot included a case signed Catchpole & Williams and a copy of an invoice from Catchpole dated 1961. If this is not the tiara worn by Helia Walker, it certainly has the same design.

If these are not the same jewels -- what can I say! The fact that the jewels sold by Koller in 2017 were in a case by Catchople & Williams does suggest that the original owners were from the UK -- or at least purchased the jewels in the UK. But, we all know that jewels can be in cases made later. Yet, there are even earrings which you had guessed might be additional to the jewel worn as a tiara! How I would love to see the invoice! I noticed that it is dated 1961, but the details of the invoice were not published by the auctioneers. Was 1961 a purchase date by a later owner? And if so, by whom? Was it a valuation date? If so, why? A repair date? What ever the result of the questions, I think that you have identified the same jewel as worn by Helia Stuart Walker for her wedding. Congratulations! Am I correct in thinking that Koller are a Swiss firm? I think that the older daughter, Iona, who married Baron Christian Oppenheim lived in Switzerland. Or am I going off track in trying to suggest that link?

Maybe the parure was made by Catchpole & Williams around 1890, and they were commissioned with the alteration of the earrings and/or some kind of repair in 1961. Perhaps the parure was sold to Catchpole & Williams at some time after Helia Walker's wedding and purchased by a later owner in 1961. Without any details of the invoice it's impossible to tell. The fact that the tiara/necklace and the matching earrings were advertised as made by Catchpole & Williams (not only on the auction house's website, but also in the press) seems to suggest though, that Koller had some sort of evidence for the maker and that it was indeed the original case which was included in the sale. I wondered if Helia's elder sister might have lived in Switzerland, and I don't think you're going off track to suggest that link. Koller is indeed a Swiss firm, based in Zurich.

Mary Innes-Kerr, Duchess of Roxburghe Posted by mauriz on February 28, 2020, 8:10 pm, in reply to "Re: Helia Immaculate Walker's pearl tiara" Beth, last year you've posted a photo of Mary Innes-Kerr, Duchess of Roxburghe (née Goelet) at a fancy dress ball in 1912, wearing a necklace which looks like the wedding tiara of Helia Walker. Maybe Mary Goelet was the necklace/tiara's first owner and it was purchased by the Walker family after her death in 1937. A somewhat clearer photo here.

That means Lady Mary might have had two more sisters-in-law, but why should they have had access to the Roxburghe jewel? Neither of the nieces and nephews of the 8th Duke of Roxburghe was married to someone named Walker, and the 9th Duke of Roxburghe had no siblings.
