Victoria of Hesse wedding presents Posted by OmerH on March 28, 2020, 11:11 pm Hope all of you are healthy & safe!! I recently came across this description of Pss Victoria's wedding presents on her marriage to Louis of Battenberg in 1884. Has anyone ever seen the amethyst tiara being worn or for that matter any of the other jewels shown. I think the star hairpins from her Grandma Queen Victoria formed the basis of her lost star tiara that was famously worn by Alice of Battenberg for her wedding to Andrew of Greece.

Quite a grand gift from a more distant relative. With regards to the emerald cross. I think that was given to her daughter Louise, later Queen of Sweden. There are pictures of her wearing crosses with colored stones. Like the picture on this page for example: https://www.unofficialroyalty.com/wedding-of-king-gustaf-vi-adolf-of-sweden-and-lady-louise-mountbatten/ There is also a picture on Wikipedia, but that cross somehow seems bigger and slightly different.

The cross in your picture does look very similar. Possibly the earrings are also those in the illustration above?? The other cross does look bigger. Wonder what stones are in that cross.

Keep in mind that Queen Marie of Bavaria was already a very lonely lady in 1884. Her younger son, Prince Otto was already kept prisoner in a castle/asylum, as he was mad and the older one, king Ludwig was already behaving very strangely. Queen Marie did not have any hope of becoming a grand mother one day. Her hessian grand nieces were certainly very dear to her.

Re: Thanks that makes a lot more sense now Posted by Vincent on March 30, 2020, 7:43 am, in reply to "Thanks that makes a lot more sense now" And apart from a the problems the Hesse children had to face in their childhood with the death of their mother, brother and sister, the fact that their father was a first cousin of kings Ludwig and Otto of Bavaria brings a very interesting light on the psychological backgrounds of the hessian princesses. There was definitely a delicate psychological heritage in the descendants of the two Prussian princesses : Queen Marie of Bavaria and princess Charles of Hesse.
