Instagram - two allegedly royal tiaras (Greece & Austria) Posted by Janet on April 14, 2020, 10:24 pm, in reply to "Instagram - the world's 3 most important natural pearls" A jewellery company, https://www.instagram.com/michaelyoungjewels/ has two tiaras it has displayed on its Instagram page, which it asserts were owned by the Empress Elisabeth and the Greek Royal Family (the owner of the company states this in the comments section in response to a query). I make no comment on the accuracy of what is asserted but they are both pretty tiaras, especially the tiara identified as having belonged to the Greek Royal Family. I find pearl peeling a fascinating subject. It is easy to understand why it was done, even, or especially, for famous pearls. But who did the skilled work? One slip, and a pearl could be ruined. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth, Thomas Bastion (TB) Ellies of Broome was recognised as one of the most skillful. The Museum of Western Australia has a fascinating article for those who are interested. I cannot remember where I read it but apparently when Queen Ingrid became Queen of Denmark, she wanted to use the beautiful pearls of the Danish crown jewels, which had not been popular with Queen Alexandrine and so had not been worn for many years. Sadly she found them looking rather poor (I am not sure if mouldy is the right word) and they had lost all their lustre. Apparently she wore them around the palace, even wearing them to bed as wearing them gradually brought back their lustre.
