Queen Mother on VE Day Posted by The Royal Watcher on April 30, 2020, 8:20 am I have been planning an article on the VE Day Celebrations to mark the upcoming 75th Anniversary and seem to recall an image I saw many years ago of the King and Queen (in the Oriental Circlet Tiara) with Churchill on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace! I’ve found some not so clear footage of the occasion, but have not been able to find the image itself! I'm hoping someone has the image saved! Youtube

I have never seen a good photo of the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on the evening of VE Day, 8 May 1945. The photo below is the best I can find, but it is very difficult to see enough of the royals to judge if QEQM was wearing a tiara. Personally, I don't think that QEQM would have worn one so soon after the war. I also have the impression from the photo below that QEII might have been still wearing her uniform, though it is difficult to be sure.

Unfortunately cant find it now. Dear Beth Queen Elizabeth II gave an interview to BBC Radio 4 correspondent Godfrey Talbot in 1985 to mark 40 years of VE day and she confirmed that her mother had worn a tiara.
