The Court jeweller website - query re Bulgaria
Posted by Janet on May 2, 2020, 10:38 pm
The Court Jeweller website has a great article about the Bulgarian fleur de lis tiara.
The author suggests it is a possibility that the tiara still exists but may be so fragile that it is no longer wearable. I am assuming this is reference to the tiara frame as opposed to the stones themselves.
It got me thinking - it is that difficult/expensive to obtain a replacement frame? I believe Queen Elizabeth II had the frame of the Vladimir tiara replaced from Gold to Platinum. Does anyone know what it would likely cost?

Probaly for the builgarian Rf the money would be no Prolbem as Queen Margarita was a rich heirs. Perhaps they see no need to have it restored as they have very few occasions to wear tiaras and they have at last 3 others.

All depends on the weight and what the metal prices are at the time.#
It used to be that Platinum was 10x more exepnsive than Gold but ever since the recession the price is pretty much the same. Platinum would be a better option for a tiara (or any jewellery tbh) as it is more durable.
Then you have to factor in the craftsmanship, it's not difficult to find someone who could make a tiara but whether they do it justice is another thing. And an expensive bench jeweller is not necessarily a good one.

This is a good question. I personally don't own so many things but for the things I do own I like to keep in very good condition. If something is broken I like to fix it quickly.
So, I am baffled at the idea of owning something like a beautiful and historic tiara that is not kept in good repair. Bent tiaras like the Spanish Aquamarine Tiara or the French Sapphire Tiara drive me nuts. And don't even get me started on missing stones. I have a large diamond brooch that I inherited - it was missing a stone and it cost next to nothing to repair it! And It took a day to fix too!
