Hi all, hope your all safe and well.
I'm writing a series of long reads on Grand Duchess Vladimir's Collection and I found this post on Instagram regarding her Pearls.
Have no doubt that the pearls came from the Grand duchess Princess Alexandra often wore pearl drop earrings set in diamond pear shaped frames that looked very like the pendants on the Grand Duchess's long sautoir necklace

The long sautoir was returned to the treasury at the outbreak of the war and was kept with the imperial jewels until they were dispersed, so the pearls are unlikely to have come from that source.

I'm writing a series of long reads on Grand Duchess Vladimir's Collection and I found this post on Instagram regarding her Pearls.
It seems like there are several cases where jewels were returned to the treasury. If I recall correctly this was the case with some of the jewels of grand duchess Alexandra Iosifovna and also some of the Leuchtenberg jewels. What was the reason for this? Were the jewels just loans? Or were they sold back to the treasury in some cases?
It was a not-unusual custom for there to be "life gifts" of jewels that were for the ornamentation of the monarchy by the more prominent members, but whose jewels returned to the treasury after the giftee's death. This was also the case with the late Princess of Wales, whose Lover's Knot Tiara, emerald choker, and so forth were returned to the Queen after Diana's death. The war pulled many of the jewels back to the treasury as it was anticipated that the expense of the war might require some backing.
This occurred during the Russo-Japanese war when Nicholas II sold of some of the unset jewels in the treasury to offset the costs of the war.

This is very interesting Sam. I have seen Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna wearing these pearls as earrings in various photos over the years. I had no idea they still existed within the English royal family and are in use.
Here's some old photos of Grand Duchess Marie and her pearls. It does look like she may have been creative with these pieces as well and possibly had various earrings etc where they could be moved around with minimal fuss.
