Sothebys: Topaz suite allegedly belonging to Princess Amelia Posted by Janet on June 26, 2020, 8:35 am Sothebys are auctioning items belonging to the late Dowager Countess Bathhurt and amongst the items are a topaz suite of jewels which "By family tradition, left by HRH The Princess Amelia (1783-1810), daughter of George III, to her Lady in Waiting" This may be an interesting purchase for the Royal Collection, there is very little I believe that pre-dates Queen Victoria, a couple of strings of pearls and some necklaces. Its estimate is GBP 18,000 - GBP 25,000. Thanks for drawing our attention to this. One thing which interests me is that, in the link to the online catalogue which Janet gave us, the parure is said "by family tradition" to have been given by Princess Amelia; yet, in the advertising link provided by The Royal Watcher the parure is said to have been "bequeathed". A case of sloppy wording?? There are obviously other very interesting jewels which will be auctioned. I suppose that, by now, most will have seen Vincent Meylan's Instagram post. It seems the Dowager Countess had a very difficult relationship with her stepson, the current Earl. I wonder if the Earl will try and buy items back?
