Queen Mary's pink topaz jewels
Posted by Franck on July 3, 2020, 6:18 pm
Queen Mary had a very lovely collection of pink topaz jewels.
Further to the information given to us on this site I have made the following list :
Pink topaz jewels given to the Duchess of Gloucester:
I. A diamond necklace with a pink topaz centerpiece – left in 1953 – not sure about the diamond necklace; found by Beth
II. A pink topaz and diamond round brooch worn as a the center of the honeysuckle tiara ; found by Beth
III. A pink topaz and a large diamond pendant brooch left in 1953; found by Beth
IV. A pink topaz pendant worn with a rectangular topaz brooch left in 1953;
V. Certainly a pink and diamond bangle bracelet left in 1953 ?;
VI. Certainly another pink and diamond pendant brooch left in 1953 ?.
Pink topaz given to Princess Margaret:
VII. An antique pink topaz and diamond pendant brooch
(This brooch was purchased by H.R.H. The Princess of Wales, later H.M. Queen Mary, in 1901.)
Conclusion :
Do you know if Queen Mary had other pink topaz jewels ?
Last but least, I am amazed by the huge quantity of turquoise and pin topaz jewels given to the Duchess of Gloucester by Queen Mary. Very sadly, these collections have left the main branch.
I will take it that those lovely topaz jewels which left the main line signals the very close bond between the Mother and daughter in law.
Regards,
Dave.

I cannot, and do not, claim discovering the brooch marked number II on the list. That honour, I think, must go to Baxter of the RJWMB. It is so regrettable that the archives of the RJWMB were lost last year. If I had realised that so much of the archives would be lost, I would have paid to keep the board advertisement free long before I did.
Until the publication of Hugh Roberts' book people used to say that all these jewels were Kunzites. Why I am not sure, as most Kunzites are a totally different shade.
I have certainly proved that some of the other jewels belonged to Queen Mary.
One jewel left off the list is the pink topaz pendant which the Duchess of Gloucester has worn in recent years. Baxter of the RJWMB had argued that the pendant was the one attached to the brooch from Princess Margaret's estate. I disagree, and think that I have proved that the Duchess' pendant is a different one, also worn by Queen Mary.
I wonder who has the pink topaz earrings Queen Mary used to wear with these jewels? I don't think we have spotted them so far.
My interest now is in trying to track down a date range for when most jewels appeared in photographs of Queen Mary.
The information supplied by Christie's (and given by Franck) shows that Queen Mary purchased the brooch later belonging to Princess Margaret in 1901. From 1900 onwards various press reports show that pink topaz jewels were very fashionable
