Vanguard Rose Brooch
Posted by Bryce on August 15, 2020, 4:44 am
I was looking at some old newsreel footage of Princess Elizabeth during her visit to Malta in 1949.
In the video below, HRH is visiting the American ship the USS Des Monies to which she wore the Vanguard Brooch which she received in 1947.
I noticed something that I did not previously know.
If you look around the 3:30 minute mark, there is a good side view of the brooch and you will see that the central part of the rose is set "en tremblant".
It is set a good couple of centimetres (1/2 inch) from the base of the brooch. I was surprised it was so pronounced.
Congratulations Bryce!! What an eagle eye you have!
I spent a lot of time today trying to find photos of this visit of QEII to the various ships in Valletta Harbour in December 1949 -- without success. The only photo I found in the newspapers showed QEII on a launch, the camera angle showing her semi-side on so that her brooch could not be seen.
The idea that the Vanguard Rose was set en tremblant was so new to me that, I wondered if the brooch wasn't the one I call the gold rose foliate brooch.
That is this brooch
Here worn by QEII in Canberra in 2011
That brooch was definitely set en tremblant, as can be seen from a detail of a photo when HM wore it in Malta in 1967.
Detail
Yet, the brooch QEII wore while visiting the ships in Malta in 1949, as seen in the video Bryce gave us the link to, does seem to be the Vanguard Rose brooch.
Below are some screen grabs which I have taken. I think that the brooch does resemble the Vanguard Rose, even though the images are not clear.
For those who are not familiar with the Vanguard Rose brooch, here is an image.

This shows clearly what Bryce was referring to.
Again congratulations Bryce! What an important find! Thank you for sharing it with us.
I do love the gold rose foliate brooch ! I would like to know more information of this brooch !

The tell tales signs for me are the 3 leaves and the bow that is right at the very bottom of the brooch (almost awkwardly from a design perspective).
Also - and maybe I am reading too much into this - the Vanguard is a brooch given to Princess Elizabeth for launching the HMS Vanguard in 1944 (I think I got the date wrong in my previous post).
So I can see HM choosing this brooch for the review a series of naval vessels.
