Thanks Janet! Another interesting book. The tiara in question was the Halo tiara. Shawcross in his biography on the Queen Mother quoted a letter from QEQM (to Queen Mary ??) in which she said she would give QEII a small diadem from QEQM's collection. The proof positive comes from Hugh Roberts The Queen's diamonds p. 222. Roberts says specifically that QEQM gave it to QEII on 21 April 1944 for QEII's 18th birthday. Unfortunately I have never seen a photo of QEII wearing the tiara. QEQM wearing the jewel I wonder if we can identify the rest of the jewels given to QEII for her 18th birthday??

In the text box the article describes a tiara worn by Queen Mary as having a large emerald in the centre... This does not sound like a known tiara. I have had some suspicions that an unknown emerald tiara was lurking in the vaults at Buckingham Palace. Any thoughts? I will pen some further thoughts on the weekend. Mike the tiara referred to in that first newspaper clipping is what I call the wing tiara with the Ladies of India carved emerald brooch as a centre piece instead of the sapphire. Unfortunately, I cannot post an image as I am unable to log into Photobucket at present.

Photobucket is working again, so I can post the images. This is the news report Franck posted. Franck posted an image showing all those in the royal box. Below is another of the images which accompanied the report. (I am not sure if I ever posted this previously) Although the image is of very poor quality, the dark centre can be seen. I think that Queen Mary was wearing what I call the wing tiara with the Ladies of India carved brooch in the centre (instead of the large sapphire). Queen Mary wore the tiara with the Ladies of India brooch quite frequently to the theatre. In the photos below, the brooch can be seen more clearly.

Didn't Queen Mary give Princess Margaret the five strand natural pearl necklace which was auctioned for her 18th?

I did a post some time back on the unknown Windsor tiaras where I had came across some pics with the present Queen and her late sister preforming at what I think were pantomimes in full head and costume dress which looked to me like genuine jewel pieces but could have been costume jewelry. I wonder if the present Queen may have been gifted a head piece or tiara much earlier? Regards, Dave. I would really like to see the ruby watch she received. For Queen Juliana''s inauguration Pss Margaret borrowed the "Lozenge" tiara from Queen Mary. Queen Mary usually wore it with the pearls from the Lovers Knot tiara. Pss Margaret also borrowed the Carrier Halo tiara from her sister for one of the events surrounding the inauguration in Netherlands.
