What jewels from Queen Alexandra are still worn (or are known to survive?) Posted by Beth on October 10, 2020, 5:58 am Sam's post below showing how the creators of The Crown have recreated the diamond and emerald pendant/brooch given to Queen Alexandra as a wedding gift by North Wales reminded me that, although we tend to consider Queen Mary the original owner of many of the British royal jewels, many of Queen Alexandra's jewels are still worn regularly. Apart from the pendant with the Prince of Wales feathers, what other jewels survive? To avoid confusion, could posters please indicate the jewel under discussion in the subject line.

(see above) Queen Alexandra's Circlet: Although it now exists in a much mutilated form unfortunately but still it comes from Alexandra. It is also said that Queen Maud inherited this turquoise tiara from her mother.

If so, then it was never owned or worn by Queen Alexandra. It was commissioned by the Irish Guards and subsequently presented to Princess Mary, Princess Royal in 1961. I found that information in a book called Up the Micks! by James Wilson. Queen Alexandra's baroque pearl is not the one worn by the Duchess of Gloucester. I argued for years that the baroque pearl worn by Queen Alexandra was not, as asserted by Leslie Field, the one worn by Queen Mary and given by the latter to Alice, Duchess of Gloucester for her wedding. The two pearls are different and have different settings; Queen Alexandra's has a gold border setting; Queen Mary's has a diamond set border. Queen Alexandra's as worn in 1913 Queen Mary's I found the final proof: a sketch of the jewel among illustrations of some wedding gifts given to Queen Mary. It was the gift of the Duchess of Bedford. and posted about it just over a year ago. HM wore the necklace at a gala performance during the president’s visit. In the photo below we get a glimpse of the back of the jewel, as well as the 6 petal diamond flower brooch which Knightship mentioned. I suspect that the choker didn't have a gap when worn by Queen Alexandra -- she had such a petite figure.

Other jewels sold, but likely to be surviving Posted by Beth on October 14, 2020, 6:37 pm, in reply to "Re: Indian pearls (pendant) from Queen Alexandra " Some of Queen Alexandra's jewels ended up with Princess Maud, (daughter of Louise, Princess Royal and Duchess of Fife), later Countess of Southesk. Some of these items were sold in 1946 following the Countess' death. They included the amethyst tiara and amethyst necklace which the Countess wore to the 1937 Coronation. As far as I know, the tiara has never been photographed or re-sold -- so we have no idea where it ended up, or who owned it. Vincent Meylan has a very informative section on both items in his book Christie's. The jewellery archives revealed pp. 69-72. The Amethyst necklace See Sotheby's http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2007/magnificent-jewels-n08371/lot.348.html has been photographed on Anne Getty (the source where I found the image below no longer seems to be operational. I gave the link to the photo in this post https://mb.boardhost.com/historyroyaljewels/msg/1534453361.html) and was sold by Gordon Getty in 2007, see http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2007/magnificent-jewels-n08371/lot.348.html Because, part of the value of this necklace is/was its provenance, I suspect the necklace will still exist. Queen Alexandra's sapphire necklace. The sapphire necklace, which Tsar Alexander and Empress Marie gave to Queen Alexandra for her 25th wedding anniversary, was also sold at the Southesk auction. Also see Vincent Meylan's book (as per above) It has been auctioned at least once in the latter half of the twentieth century. I suspect that it will also survive because of its historical value. At least one of the Fleurs de Lys from Queen Alexandra's "crown" is likely to have survived. In his book on Christie's, Vincent Meylan documented the sale of one of the Fleurs de Lys. The one which was auctioned had been given to Lady Glenarthur, a friend of Queen Alexandra. In his book Vincent Meylan argues, convincingly, that, despite the description in the auction catalogue, the Fleur de Lys is most likely to have come from Queen Alexandra's Regal circlet, not her coronation crown. I have evidence suggesting that this Fleur de Lys was purchased and made an heirloom by a wealthy Englishman, and it is likely that it is still retained by the family today.

So, it is highly likely that the necklace still exists. (I'd go as far as to say it is certain, but...) Since Queen Alexandra wore her amethysts so frequently (according to press reports) it is amazing that we do not have a photo of her wearing the jewels. Such a gap in our records of the Queen's jewels!
