Another example of Queen Alexandra wearing rubies
Posted by Kongetro on January 29, 2021, 1:30 am
In 2019 Beth posted on a thread concerning the Oriental Circlet and the Crown Ruby Demi-Parure and gave some examples of Queen Alexandra wearing rubies. Here is the link to her message:
Her examples are all from events in the United Kingdom. But, as I have discovered, Queen Alexandra also wore rubies abroad. During a visit made by Emperor Wilhelm II to Denmark she is reported to have worn a ruby tiara and a ruby necklace. As Beth said in her post; since we do not know of any other ruby set owned by Queen Alexandra I suspect that it might indeed have been the Oriental Circlet and the Crown Ruby necklace. She is also said to have worn several large rubies fastened to her dress.
I have written a little bit more about it in my blog if anybody is interested in reading more about it.
Thank you Kongetro. It is so very interesting to read about this wearing of the rubies. I also suspect that the Queen was wearing the re-worked jewels of Queen Victoria.
Queen Alexandra did have some ruby jewels given to her by the Ladies of South Australia for her silver wedding anniversary, but none of the descriptions I have seen of Queen Alexandra wearing rubies after she became Queen seem to match this gift -- although there is, at least, one report when she was Princess of Wales which would explain her ruby jewels.
The South Australian gift for the silver wedding anniversary.
This news report is from 1891, long before Queen Alexandra had access to Queen Victoria's suite; yet, after she received her silver wedding anniversary gifts, so I think it may refer to her wearing the South Australian gift.
Re: Another example of Queen Alexandra wearing rubies
What a fantastic find Beth, you continue to inspire me in terms of your valid and entailed research. I wonder if these pieces are still in the vault?
Regards,
Dave.
