QEII. Brooch worn in Ethiopia in 1965
Posted by Beth on February 1, 2021, 6:44 pm
I wonder if the brooch seen on QEII in the photos below from her State Visit to Ethiopia in 1965 is the Albert sapphire brooch worn vertically or another, unknown brooch?
My queries are because, in some of the stills I made from a video, it looks as if the central stone is a large cabochon. As can be seen from a colour photo, HM wore a blue dress and hat, so I think it is reasonable to assume that the stone is a sapphire.
It has twelve surrounding diamonds, like the Albert brooch, and is the correct size.

I agree Dmitry. I am beginning to suspect that the video may have given a false impression of a cabochon stone, particularly as the last still I posted gives the appearance of a faceted stone.
I agree. The number of diamonds matches. Also some photos of this brooch if they are not close up or of poor quality do not show the sapphires facets well. Given the age of the photo and the outfit I think this is a given. GreT work as always and good thread.
